What to Do With Old Comic Books

Author: admin  //  Category: Art And Entertainment
Vince Platania, Jr. asked:

Everyone at one time or another had those old comic books lying around. Either from childhood, or they belonged to your parents or even grandparents. Or perhaps they were given to you from someone close who wanted to get rid of theirs. Most of the time they’re not worth much, just nice to have around for nostalgia’s sake. Other times you can find a real gem that you could keep and hold dear, or sell that puppy on Ebay or to a local retailer.

Regardless of where they came from or what one intends to do with them, those old comic books bring back a lot of memories and can be hard to let go of. But sometimes it’s necessary to do just that, either to lessen the clutter in your home, to make some quick cash, or to make room for more new ones! It’s still hard to let go of all those memories and cool stories you enjoyed so many years ago, but it can be worth it.

How do you know if they’re worth anything though? Well, if you’re not a regular comic reader, it’s a common misconception that they’re all worth at least as much as their cover price, and if they’re old they must be worth more. Sadly, that is almost never the case. Like anything else, comics depreciate with age, and with every tiny little crease they may have. They also lose value if the characters represented are no longer popular, or if the comics aren’t old enough. In fact, anything 1970s and up is probably not going to be worth a lot unless it’s a hot storyline, by a top creator, or features a first appearance by a very popular character.

One way you can find out if your old comic books are worth anything is to have them graded by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) which grades comics and places them in a plastic protective covering to further preserve them. They also give a seal and a document of authenticity and of course a rating. Graded comics generally sell for considerably larger amounts than the same comic in mint condition that is not graded. But grading comes at a price. For each comic you grade it cost you anywhere from $20 to $80 depending. While it will sell for more, it may still be hard to find a buyer, and you’re cutting your profit by the cost of the grading.

Ebay is a great way of getting rid of old comic books as well. Everyone uses Ebay these days, and you can set reserve prices, or open it all the way up. You can sell single issues or collections. And you can describe your items in intricate detail for the potential buyers. Tons of comics are sold on Ebay every day.

You could also just give them away to Salvation Army, the local library, or some kid down the street if you wish. They’re your comics, so do what you want with them. If you want to keep your old comic books around, but you want to protect them, go purchase some bags and boards from your local or favorite online comic shop and throw them in a box for storage. It’s your call.

Are You an Internet Geek?

Author: admin  //  Category: Computers
Bailey StJames asked:

Are You An Internet Geek?

Do you spend hours on the net just surfing around? Do you spend most of your evenings reading or writing on blogs? How about on line games? It reminds me of an old joke. It goes like this.

Signs You’re An Internet Geek

10. When filling out your driver’s license application you give your IP address.

9. You no longer ask prospective dates what their sign is; instead your line is “Hi, what’s your URL?”

8. Instead of calling you to dinner, your spouse sends e-mail.

7. You’re amazed to find out spam is a food.

6. You “ping” people to see if they’re awake, “finger” them to find out how they are, and “AYT” them to make sure they’re listening to you.

5. You search the Net endlessly hoping to win every silly free T-shirt contest.

4. You introduce your wife as “my lady@home.wife” and refer to your children as “client applications”.

3. At social functions you introduce your husband as “my domain server”.

2. After winning the office super bowl pool you blurt out, “I feel so colon-right parentheses!”

And the number one sign you are an Internet Geek:

1. Two Words: “Pizza’s Here!”

Many people really enjoy being on-line and doing the “fun” things on the net. They spend hours and hours on their computers.

Then they go to work 10-hours a day 5-day a week, and wish (all the time) they didn’t have to.

Many of them might think to themselves “Man! I wish I had been born rich instead of so darned good looking” (RIGHT!) Never realizing they could convert “some” of that

on-line time into profitable endeavors.

It’s true there are a lot of scamers (on the net) to take all your hard earned money, but there is also a few really good ways to make an honest buck as well.

Thousands of folks just like you and me make a good living working with things like E-bay. Some do survey sites. Many even set up their own website and sell their own products.

One of the best ways to get started is to do “affiliate” marketing. With affiliate marketing you don’t have to supply your own product. You don’t have to build a web site (unless you want to.) You don’t even have to collect the payments.

There are 3 simple steps you have to do.

1) You do have to set up a “Clink Bank” account (which is simple and free to set up.)

2) You do have to pick a GOOD product to sell.

3) You do have to promote it.

You don’t have to find a mentor to get started, but I did a lot of research and decided to join a club that helped me out a great deal.

So, all you “internet Geeks.” Stop using all your time and talent just having fun on the net. Make a few adjustments to you on line time and start having fun and (perhaps) make a few (or a lot) of bucks at the same time.

Ideal Christmas Gifts for Geeks

Author: admin  //  Category: Gifts
Ajeet Khurana asked:

There are plenty of gift ideas that you can think of if you want to give a Christmas gift to your geeky buddy. This would be quite an interesting job, as there are plenty of options to choose from. There will also be many stores as well as shopping websites offering good discounts during the Christmas season. What gift you choose will also depend on the individual that you are buying it for.

You could start thinking about getting some game consoles or one of the latest game DVDs that are out in the market. This will be a great idea if you are shopping for a geek, and it will also provide a great deal of entertainment for you. The latest game consoles are always a craze among geeks. If they already own the latest one, then you can probably think of getting a collection of old games which would probably be a bit of a collector’s item. This would make for a very rare gift, as you could pick out a collection of games that had entered the market ages ago. The great thing is that this will not cost you too much either.

If your geeky friend is the type who cannot get away from the computer, you could think about getting him/her some of the latest computer books. These will prove to be very handy for your buddy. (S)he can use the book for reference as well as for general knowledge.

Expensive computer magazines can also be very appealing gifts. After all, they offer plenty of information that the computer geek would welcome. There are plenty of computer accessories available. These would be great geek gifts for during the Christmas season.

In the case of those geeks who claim to be gadget crazy, going shopping for new age cell phones or the latest electronic gadgets will be a great idea. Since the market is being bombarded with updates very often, these will be a good choice. But if you do not know what exactly to get them, just write out a gift certificate. Your friend can then go and shop for whatever (s)he wants at a store of her/his choice.

You could also get innovative and try your hand at other gifts. You can buy T-shirts, or other accessories that spell geek. You could try getting them posters of the things that they are crazy about. The more unique these are, the more they will be appreciated. If you have a lot of money, think about getting the latest iPods and laptops for your geek buddies. This should keep them going for a long time.

Most geeks adore anything to do with computers. So you have a series of options available to you. You could choose from among high storage external disks, portable disks, and also memory cards with good storage. All of these can be found on online shopping sites, and you could find some other suggestions as well. Many sites even list out the gadgets of the year award, which would make geek gift shopping easier for you.

K & N: Knights and Nerds

Author: admin  //  Category: Automotive
Jimmy Plant asked:

I’m not that big of a geek, but I hang out with a lot of them. For example, two of my good friends Tim and Mike are really into sci-fi and fantasy and they’re always trying to get me to go to comic conventions, midnight Dungeons & Dragons sessions and of course the renaissance fair.

I usually resist, but end up going along. When they asked me to go to the renaissance fair, I couldn’t think of a good excuse, and plus I’ve never seen such a fair before, so I thought, “What the heck…”

We all piled into the geekwagon— my cherry red Mustang—and headed down to the park. When we got there, I was amazed. The whole place had been transformed into a medieval wonderland, with tents and turrets and moats everywhere. We passed a blacksmith hammering a newly forged sword amidst bales of straw and an old lady selling roast beast.

Just for fun, I picked up a helmet with a full visor and placed it on my head. Inside it was dark and stifling and I flailed around while my Tim and Mike howled with laughter. I guess I flailed a little too hard because I lost my balance and fell right into someone who was standing nearby. I pulled off my helmet sheepishly and was confronted with the angry eyes of a knight with a thick black beard.

“You there, peasant,” he barked, “How dare thee accost a noble?”

“My bad,” I said blinking up at him, “I guess I’m just not used to wearing armor.”

The knight snarled.

“Methinks this varlet needs to be taught a lesson!” And he threw down his gauntlet and glowered at me.

Tim and Mike were no help. They quickly stepped into their roles.

“Sir, thou dost insult us mightily,” said Tim.

“Yea, good sir, thy challenge is accepted,” added Mike, “We shall vanquish thee at noon upon the jousting grounds.”

And that’s how I found myself on a horse in a full suit of armor with a jousting lance in my hand racing down a track at breakneck speed.

Before the impact, I there was only one thought in my mind, that I’d never see my beloved geekwagon again…

The knight’s lance crashed into my breastplate and I flew off my horse and smashed into the ground. The black bearded knight dismounted and strutted around as the crowd roared their approval and showered their victor with roses. My faithful squires Tim and Mike dragged my battered body off the field and helped me out of my armor.

After resting an hour we all went back to the geekwagon. In the parking lot, I saw my arch nemesis the knight putting his armor into the trunk of his Ford Escort. Out of costume he was almost unrecognizable.

“Hey Sir Knight!” I yelled. Then I gunned my engine so hard that the shockwave from the car’s exhaust hit the knight full on. He flew back and slammed into a castle wall and lay on the ground unconscious and possibly dead. Tim and Mike whooped with joy.

“The enemy has been vanquished!” they shouted. And we sallied forth out onto the open road…
